ABUJA – Governor Bassey Edet Otu has hailed Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe as a rare, people-oriented leader whose deep connection with his constituents continues to foster unity and political stability across Cross River State. The governor made the remarks at Jarigbe’s 55th birthday celebration held at the Hilton Hotel, Abuja.
Otu said no individual is created without purpose, explaining that while people may not attain their destinies simultaneously, the ability to navigate life’s phases determines when one reaches their moment of elevation.
“I want to say that nobody came to this world for nothing… but the bridge between people achieving that purpose is how to manage and navigate to get to that date of promotion,” he stated. “I celebrate people who are people-oriented and loved by the people. Distinguished Senator Jarigbe Agom seems to be one.”
The governor described the Senator as a leader “entwined with his people,” contrasting him with others who “carry on without a pulpit,” a tendency Otu said is detrimental to society.
Reflecting on age and leadership, Otu noted that 55 remains a youthful and impactful stage of life. He recounted his younger perception of age 50 as the end of vitality but humorously observed that he has since surpassed that age and remains “kicking and very, very strong.”
Extending goodwill on behalf of Cross Riverians at home and in the diaspora, Otu said the people hold Senator Jarigbe in high esteem for his unwavering service. He recalled that during a period of sharp political division in the state, Jarigbe stood as the major opposition due to his people-centred positions, yet today, Cross River stands more united than in previous years.
The governor said he was particularly impressed by the turnout at the event, councilors, House of Assembly members, local government chairmen and their deputies, as well as former governors, despite the occasion falling on a Tuesday.
According to him, the unity and political harmony on display reflect a state moving forward under collective purpose. “Cross River State is going forward and will never go back,” Otu declared, noting that his administration has achieved significant milestones within a short period.
“God has done very well in our state. We are breaking new grounds and making new endings,” he said, adding that the state is experiencing value addition “in all ramifications,” supported by a new generation of leaders ready to sustain the progress.
Wishing Senator Jarigbe well, the governor said turning 55 comes with experience, clarity and strengthened commitment. “At 55, you have gained enough experience. In terms of maturity, you can take a decision in any sphere of life,” he noted.
While acknowledging that the future belongs to God, Otu expressed optimism about what lies ahead for the celebrant. “Power belongs to God, but I know that there are better days to come,” he said.
The Abuja celebration drew a wide array of dignitaries, underscoring Jarigbe’s broad political influence and the growing climate of reconciliation across Cross River State.
