GENEVA, SWITZERLAND — Distinguished Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong has joined the Nigerian delegation to the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly currently holding in Geneva, Switzerland, where lawmakers from around the world have convened under the theme: “Upholding Humanitarian Norms and Supporting Humanitarian Action in Times of Crisis.”
The IPU Assembly, one of the most significant gatherings of the global parliamentary community, brings together representatives from over 170 national parliaments to deliberate on pressing international issues, foster cooperation, and strengthen democratic governance.
This year’s theme resonates deeply against the backdrop of growing global instability marked by conflicts, humanitarian crises, and widespread displacement. The Assembly aims to develop actionable frameworks to reinforce respect for humanitarian law and enhance international solidarity in responding to crises.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Senator Ekpenyong expressed his profound honour at being part of Nigeria’s delegation, describing the Assembly as a vital platform for shaping collective parliamentary responses to global humanitarian challenges.
“This year’s theme is particularly significant as nations across the globe grapple with conflicts, displacement, and humanitarian emergencies. I look forward to robust deliberations on solutions to these pressing issues,” Senator Ekpenyong said.
The discussions at the Assembly are expected to culminate in resolutions and collaborative strategies geared towards protecting civilians in conflict zones, strengthening humanitarian partnerships, and reaffirming global commitment to peace and human dignity.
Nigeria’s participation, led by its delegation of parliamentarians, underscores the country’s continued dedication to advancing global peace, justice, and human rights through constructive parliamentary diplomacy.
