✓ Deputy Governor announces security deployment and state takeover of disputed land
Calabar, 17 September 2025 — In a decisive move to end years of violent clashes, the Cross River State Government has rolled out far-reaching measures aimed at restoring peace between warring communities in Ikom and Obubra Local Government Areas.
The conflict, involving the Alesi/Ekukunela/Agbaragba and Ochon/Isabang/Odonget communities, has long plagued the central part of the state with recurring hostilities and loss of lives.
Speaking after weeks of intensive stakeholder deliberations spearheaded by the State Security Adviser, the Deputy Governor, Dr Peter Odey, outlined the government’s strategy to break the cycle of violence and secure lasting stability.
According to Dr Odey, the measures include the deployment of security operatives to maintain calm and the vesting of ownership rights of the disputed land in the State Government.
“By this singular act, the root of contention is extinguished, transforming the territory into a protected heritage under state custody,” he declared.
The Deputy Governor further stressed that peace, safety, and the collective wellbeing of citizens remain non-negotiable.
“Elders, youths, and community leaders are enjoined to embrace reconciliation, cooperate with security agencies, and desist from hostility,” he urged, noting that, “only through unity can progress and stability take firm root across our beloved State.”
The Cross River State Government assured residents that these measures are part of a wider peacebuilding initiative designed to protect lives and property while promoting development across all communities.
Odey, reaffirmed that the administration of Governor Bassey Otu is committed to ensuring that communal strife no longer undermines social harmony and economic growth in the state.
