NIGERIA’S SO-CALLED ‘ELITES’ ARE NOTHING BUT POLITHIEFCIANS, LOOTOCRATS AND DEPRAVED SCOUNDRELS- DELE FAROTIMI.
I BORROWED MY HEADLINE FROM DELE FAROTIMI.
Nigeria, a land teeming with brilliance, blessed with natural resources and a resilient population, finds itself caught in the vice grip of a criminal class disguised as political elites.
These are not visionaries, statesmen or custodians of the public good. No. What we have are Polithiefcians (political thieves); Lootocrats (men and women whose loyalty is to the vaults they empty, not the people they serve); and Depraved Scoundrels (deceitful actors skilled in plundering the hopes of a nation).
For decades, this clan of power-hungry operatives has weaponised poverty, tribalism, religion and institutional decay to tighten their grip on the levers of power. They have no national interest, only personal gain. They do not build institutions, they bleed them. They don’t serve, they subjugate.
This is why schools decay while their children study abroad. Hospitals rot while they jet off to London or Dubai for minor treatments. Roads remain death traps while they cruise in convoys. Budgets are mere rituals, not instruments of development. The people? Mere stepping stones during election seasons.
We must reject the notion that these individuals are our “elites.” True elites are nation builders, thinkers, innovators, and patriots. These looters are anti-elites, parasites on the national soul.
What Can Be Done?
1. Constitutional Reforms & True Federalism:
We need sweeping legal reforms that decentralise power, cut down the cost of governance, and hold officeholders more accountable. A system that rewards mediocrity and protects criminality must be overhauled.
2. Judicial Independence & Swift Justice:
Our judiciary must be insulated from political influence. Special anti-corruption courts should deliver quick, transparent, and irreversible judgments against looters.
3. Asset Recovery & Permanent Disqualification:
Public officers found guilty of looting must forfeit their assets and be banned for life from holding any office. Political corruption must have a painful price.
4. Civic Enlightenment & Political Consciousness:
Nigerians must become more politically aware. Schools, Churches, Mosques and Media Platforms must teach political education, not propaganda.
5. Diaspora Voting & Electoral Integrity:
The diaspora often the most educated and exposed Nigerians, must be allowed to vote. Coupled with biometric electoral systems, this can neutralise local rigging and thuggery, INEC must be called to order.
6. Media Independence & Investigative Journalism:
Media outlets must serve as watchdogs, not lapdogs. The press must expose, not endorse, corruption; The press must be patriotic.
7. Youth Inclusion & Mentorship:
The youth must stop being manipulated as political foot soldiers. We need a new crop of leaders trained, mentored and prepared to lead with integrity.
Final Word
Nigeria’s greatest threat is not inflation or unemployment. It is the entrenchment of a ruling class that sees governance as conquest. Until we name and shame them, hold them accountable, and dismantle the systems that empower them, true progress will remain a mirage.
The revolution we need is not only on the streets, but in our minds, laws, institutions, and
ballots.
Let us Rise. Let us Resist. Let us Reclaim Nigeria!
