LABOUR PARTY CROSS RIVER STATE TO ANNOUNCE DATES SOON FOR POLLING UNITS, WARDS, AND CHAPTER CONGRESSES.

It is no longer news that the self-inflicted crisis within the Labour Party (LP), orchestrated by Julius Abure and his cohorts, was finally put to rest by a five-member panel of Justices of the Supreme Court. The apex court’s ruling set aside the unconstitutional interference of the Abuja Appeal Court, which had wrongfully recognized Abure as the National Chairman of the National Working Committee (NWC). This outcome affirms Thucydides’ timeless assertion: “The strong do what they can, and the weak suffer what they must.”

Julius Abure’s utterances—akin to the “voice of Jacob but the hands of Esau”—exposed the insidious plot to undermine democracy and weaken the Labour Party’s commitment to being a viable alternative for national redemption.

The Supreme Court’s judgment is a resounding victory for democracy, the rule of law, and party constitutionalism. The impunity and abuse of process championed by Barr. Julius Abure and his group have been roundly rejected. “Roma locuta, causa finita est”—Rome has spoken, and the matter is settled. However, the contemptuous response by Obiora Ifoh on Abure’s behalf post-judgment is not only laughable but a dangerous precedent that reflects the desperation of certain political actors to defy both logic and legality. As far as we are concerned, “It is finished!”

In Cross River State, we align ourselves with the position of the Acting National Chairperson, Senator Nenadi E. Usman, PhD, who rightly described the ruling as one of “no victor, no vanquished,” urging all members to unite in purpose and vision to rebuild the Party.

Her sentiments were echoed by the Acting National Secretary, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, who stated:
“This historic ruling is not only a victory for the Labour Party, but also for the Nigerian people and our democracy. It affirms that the rule of law will always be upheld. We now have an opportunity to rebuild Nigeria’s democracy and strengthen our Party, which remains the political party of choice for millions of Nigerians.”

We in Cross River State view this ruling as the beginning of a new dawn—not only for the Labour Party but also for the supremacy of democratic principles over tyranny, conspiracy, and greed. This is a time for sober reflection, a time to take stock and build lasting structures. We call on well-meaning democrats and patriots to join us in celebrating justice and the triumph of the rule of law over impunity.

As a Party founded on integrity, justice, and the will of the people, we in Cross River stand firmly with the National Leadership led by Senator Nenadi E. Usman and millions of Nigerians who envision a transparent, accountable, and responsive government.

The decision of the Apex Court further affirms the judiciary’s resolve to uphold justice. While the judgment may have been passed, the voices of the people and the Labour Party faithful grow even louder and stronger.

Under the leadership of Comrade John O. Ushie, PhD, JP, the Labour Party in Cross River State remains committed to unifying the party, strengthening our grassroots presence, and fostering a political environment conducive to reform and nation-building. We remain dedicated to the ideals of democracy, grassroots engagement, and people-first policy advocacy.

Comrade Dr. Ushie has already commenced stakeholder engagements across the Party’s spectrum. More than ever, we are resolute in our mission to mobilize and organize ahead of the upcoming Wards, Chapter, State, and National Congresses. The timetable for these exercises will soon be released by the National Leadership following consultations and wide engagement with stakeholders.

We believe in a New Nigeria that is POssible—inspired by the ideals of social democracy. This includes a political order rooted in issue-based politics and clear ideological direction, with a commitment to advancing the cause of the working class, farmers, artisans, professionals, intellectuals, students, environmentalists, patriotic businesspeople, and all Nigerians who embrace justice, equality, freedom, progress, and unity.

Though the task ahead is daunting, we believe that the will of the people will ultimately triumph over the interests of a selfish few. To echo Plato, “The punishment which the wise suffer who refuse to take part in the government is to live under the government of worse men.”

Let posterity bear witness that we did not sit idly by when it was time to salvage Nigeria and her people from the clutches of tyranny, demagoguery, and impostors. Our democratic hope lies in the strength of the April 4, 2025, Supreme Court ruling. “Roma locuta, causa finita est.”

Consequently, the Labour Party leadership and stakeholders in Cross River State will soon announce a date to engage the media and fully brief the public on the next course of action regarding our programmes and preparations for the Polling Units, Wards, and Chapter Congresses.

Signed:
Comrade Amawu Cletus Albert Amawu
State Publicity Secretary,
Labour Party Interim Committee, Cross River State

13 April, 2025.
