HON. CHRISTOPHER AGBEH, EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER RISING FIRE OUTBREAKS IN OGOJA, PROMISE TO UNCOVER CAUSES.
Ogoja Local Government Council Chairman, Hon. Christopher Agbeh, has expressed concern over the frequent fire outbreaks in the area, following two such incidents that occurred within a short span of time, causing damage valued in millions of Naira.
The Chairman made these remarks during a visit from the Nkim Elders, who led a delegation to his office to express their concerns over the devastating fire that destroyed property at both the High Court of Justice, Ogoja, and the Ultra-Modern Market at Ishibori, Ogoja Urban. During the visit, the Chairman informed that he has inspected the affected sites and reiterated his commitment to uncovering the causes of these fire incidents. He directed the local security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation, with decisions to be made based on the findings.
The Chairman also reported that the issue has reached the State Headquarters, where both the Council and the Ogoja State House of Assembly member have called for urgent action to address the plight of the victims and seek interventions from relevant agencies.
Regarding the deteriorating condition of the market, the Chairman assured the public that the Council is committed to improving its standard. He has directed the Department of Works to oversee the upgrading of market facilities, including the clearance of drainage paths.
Hon. Simeon Egbaji, who spoke on behalf of the delegation, lamented the rising frequency of fire incidents in the area, saying the delegation represents the concerns of the entire Nkim community, which has grown increasingly anxious about the recurring outbreaks.
Elder Dr. Ikani Wogar expressed appreciation for the Chairman’s prompt response, describing it as both protective and responsive to the community’s needs. He urged the Chairman to ensure that necessary actions are taken, particularly in addressing the dilapidated condition of the market.
On his part, Hon. Modey Boniface Osheni, the Councillor representing Urban Ward 1, thanked the Chairman and the elders for their concern. He appealed to all relevant government bodies to urgently address the issue and implement interim measures to alleviate the victims’ losses.
