A Non-Governmental Organisation known as Ideal Women For Better Society IWBS, on Monday, the 11th day of March 2024, condemned in strong terms the alleged Budget Padding by the 10th National Assembly.

This is in response to the allegation by Sen. Abdul Ningi regarding the 2024 budget padding by N3 trillion making it N28 trillion from N25 trillion.

In a release signed by its National President/Co-founder, Barr (Mrs) Juliet O. Anyata urged the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and other relevant authorities to as a matter of urgency intervene in the matter and let Nigerians know the true state of the subject.

While calling on both the Senate and House of Representatives to come clean on the matter by revealing the true state of the affairs to Nigerians, said the issue if not tackled properly has a detrimental effect on both the psyche of the people and the economy.

According to the statement, “The practice if is true has the tendency not only to undermine the trust of the people but is capable of exacerbating the economic challenges faced by Nigerians. It is barbaric and inhumane at this point in our history for a certain arm of government to act in such a manner” while millions of Nigerians are lavishing due to hunger.

It’s unethical and a grave offense against the people of Nigeria to inflate budget figures or allocate funds for undisclosed projects or personal gains, hence, we call on all well-meaning Nigerians to condemn it in its entirety”

The statement noted that such reprehensible behaviour not only squanders public funds but also deprives essential sectors of the economy of much-needed resources to function efficiently.

However, the group noted that the repercussions of budget padding are dire as it is capable of exacerbating the already precarious economic situation in the country with inflation soaring and unemployment rates at alarming levels, every naira misappropriated further deepens the economic woes of ordinary Nigerians.

“As concerned citizens and stakeholders in the economic prosperity of Nigeria, we urgently call upon the Senate, anti-graft Agencies, and other relevant authorities to launch a thorough investigation into these allegations and bring those culpable or responsible for this egregious misconduct to book”.

Furthermore, we urge the Senate to enact stringent bills and oversight mechanisms to checkmate as well as prevent future occurrences of budget padding while transparency and accountability must be upheld at all levels of governance to restore the trust of the Nigerian people and ensure prudent allocation of public funds.

More so, the economic well-being of Nigeria and its citizens hangs in the balance, and decisive action must be taken to stem the tide of corruption and mismanagement. We stand united in our demand for accountability, transparency, and justice, the statement stressed.
