Prudent and Strategic plans are being put in place by the Administration of His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu to diversify the State’s economy and increase productivity in Cross River State.

One such move was displayed recently as the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) in collaboration with Cross River State Ministry of Commerce flagged off a two-day seminar program for the distribution of coffee and tea seedlings to respective farmers across the state.

Presenting an address, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Irrigation Development, Hon.Johnson Andiambey Ebokpo who was also the Chairman of the event, rated Coffee as one of the most important cash crops with numerous health benefits including but not limited to derisking death from liver cirrhosis, decreasing harmful liver enzymes as well as limiting liver scarring in people infected with hepatitis C.

Ebokpo admitted that coffee is one of the shrub plants that is globally recognised as a cash crop and has gained so much momentum in the international market, adding that the Federal Government of Nigeria is working hard to design a monetary policy that will help to control the foreign currency fluctuations while strengthening the local currency and also boosts the economy to help ameliorate the present hardship in the nation.

The Commissioner said, “Although it will not be an easy task as the challenges in the country are systemic and no amount of adjustments can hurriedly fix the menace, I, therefore advise that the only way to achieve a healthy living is by falling back to agriculture which is the mainstay of our economy.”

The Commissioner assured that the Cross River State Government shall collaborate with stakeholders in the Coffee and tea value chain to ensure adequate commercial production of coffee and tea by providing the required hectares of land needed for the cultivation of the coffee crop and effective technical support of Agricultural Extension workers to collaborate in driving the process.

The Commissioner for Commerce, Mrs. Abigail Duke, Dr. Assam Assam, the National Secretary of Coffee and Tea Association of Nigeria who doubles as State chairman of NACOFTAN, and Traditional Rulers were some of the dignitaries that graced the event.
