The President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC) Prof. Benjamin Okaba has urged Governor Douye Diri, winner of the November 11 governorship election in Bayelsa State to be magnanimous in victory by embracing everybody and political parties to move the State forward.

Prof Okaba who made the call in a telephone interview with Visiting Journalists in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital recently, averred that the governor needs to treat all Bayelsans alike irrespective of those who voted for him and those who did not.

“The governor has to be very magnanimous in victory by embracing everybody and also carry all the parties along irrespective of those who voted for him and those that voted against him, he should treat all Bayelsans the same and also extend the dividends of democracy to all the nook and cranny of the State. He should consolidate the gains in the area of human capital development, infrastructural development, maintaining peace, security, and tranquility in the State and providing the needed impetus for the industrialization of the State”

He therefore calls on the governor to hit the ground running given that he has only four years left to lead the State.

In terms of rating regarding the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, preparedness and performance, the INC leader noted that though there was voter apathy and some skirmishes in some areas regarding violence the exercise went well and could be scored fifty-five percent (55%), this he said was as a result of the enthusiasm of Bayelsans and the due diligence on the part of INEC and the acceptability of the result by political actors.

In the area of security, Okaba while urging the security agencies to do better, applauded them for fending off chaotic and violent situations before, during, and after the election.

Meanwhile, while admitting that this year’s exercise was far better than the previous elections, the INC Chieftain called on all stakeholders especially INEC to work on the deployment of materials to polling units especially around the riverine areas.

“the areas we need to improve upon is the deployment of materials especially around riverine areas, then in terms of security, we have a few cases of highjack of materials particularly the one that involved the capsizing of a boat should be investigated properly because those things were not just ordinary, if we can improve on that.

Also, “I worry that people who were perceived to be of other political parties were driven from their communities, which is very worrisome. There were red flags raised a few months before the elections on these issues and surprisingly most of these things were not properly handled. Election should not be the only reason why we should stop being brothers and sisters, or why we should kill ourselves” he stressed.
