The conduct of the 2023 election that produced Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President is still being contested at the Election Petition tribunal. The petitioners have argued based on the fact that the election was conducted with INEC failing to follow its own laid down procedure. The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba Land, Gani Adams has alleged that there is no justice in the electoral system.
While many people have argued that the 2023 election is the best in Nigeria’s history, Aare Ona Kakanfo contended that the 1993 election cannot be compared with the 2023 election. He stated the fact that the winner could only get 8 million votes out of 87 million registered voters across the country.
He said, ”You cannot compare them in any ramifications. What was the population of the people that registered as voters in the last election? In the 1993 election, the percentage of people who registered was about 70 percent. But in the last election, the people that voted for the three major political parties were not up to 80 percent.
Even the winner got 8 million votes out of 87 million registered voters in the last election. You would realize all is because there is no justice in our electoral system.”
