USANI’S POLICY ON SECURITY & EDUCATION

By David Agabi

Having talked extensively about fighting insecurity in Cross River State if voted for as Governor, I am afraid that all my talking points will not be spelt out here but I promise to make the video available for you soon.

Following, I was also asked what will be my policy framework for education in Cross River State and I had this to say:

USANI: Concerning the educational sector in Nigeria, to be truthful to ourselves, we all will admit to the fact that there is a collapse not a failure at it and it is when you know the depth of a problem that you can proffer solutions.

The decadence I find having been exposed to the public administrative space of Nigeria is what informs my very aggressive policy and action that I will take as Governor of Cross River State.

MY APPROACH

The first thing I will like to do which may not be pleasing to all because I believe that Governance should not be built on falsehood and for a fact that those who like it will support me and those who don’t like it, won’t support me, I will take seriously the matter of school enrolment. Yes! enrolment is just having the numerics that enlist in attending schools of different categories, I don’t think we have a problem with that because, at all times, we have people who are of school age even those who are under school age enlisted by their parents to begin school.

Also, you know that in the advanced world, there is child education as a specialization, infant education as a specialization, adolescent education as a specialization, and adult and tertiary education as a specialization. Someone cannot train in one segment of the education and be allowed to teach in another segment of education which is very important.

On this account, beginning from enrolment, I think we should have a minimum age within which a child should be enrolled in primary 1 at least. These days you find a child at 8 years or 9 years already finishing primary school and heading to secondary school to be exposed to boarding life and at that moment such child is detached from the family and the family values are lost.

The peer group influence places a higher degree, especially in a perverse digital communication world where all things are copied from unknown sources and people grow with that. This also contributes to the crime wave we have in society. So, at the level of enrolment, I think we need to have a minimum age. If we want to agree as a policy, maybe 5 years or 6 years as it were, and then, beyond that, we will strengthen the inspectorate department of the different levels of education.

To be continued tomorrow.

Thanks for being attentive.
