Concerned over the mass attrition of Nigerian Nurses Professionals abroad,a quintessential Nurse,Dr (Mrs) Victoria Asabe Undeshi recently call on the Federal government to as a matter of necessity and urgency look into the wages and services of nurses in the country.
Dr Asabe who stated this in an interview with EpistleNews during the Capping/Matriculation ceremony of School of Basic Midwifery Obudu, maintained that money payable to nurses should be commiserate with their training and services rendered.
According to her “most nurses in Nigeria are underpaid, not only money, there is also low staff motivation. Meanwhile, most parents have invested so much in training these sets of professionals;so if there’s any slightest opportunity most of them will open up and leave”
“My advice is that government should employ more nurses and pay money commiserate with the job they’re doing” she posited.
The astute nurse express joy over the matriculation ceremony of the school (recent standing) noting that it has suffered series of setback in time past owing to accreditation which was as a result of under staffing, facilities among others.
“I’m so happy because the school was closed down for six years, we were denied accreditation because of lack of lecturers, facilities, lack of laboratories and lack of structures; but the present administration in two thousand and fifteen (2015)started working towards the actualisation of the accreditation and by God’s grace here we are today,so I’m very delighted”
“The government have done a lot, WHO,Population Council,Ministry of Health and the School itself have done a lot. She also thank the stakeholders who have supported both financially, morally and materially towards the actualisation of the accreditation”
Speaking further, the Florence Nightingale example, stressed that the event is unique in the sense that it is the first time the School is having such Sets of students averring that in the past the school was running a Post Basic programme.
She therefore prayed for the students to acquire the requisite skills and training required for excellent performance and services in the future.
Highlight of the event was cutting of the matriculation cake, dancing and group photographs.
