The Cross River State Government through the State’s Sports Commission have partnered the Red Cross Society of Nigeria in training Sport Officials and Athletes on safety and First Aid measures to curb preventable deaths among sportsmen.
Declaring the three day event opened at the Complex hall of the Canaan Table Tennis Centre, U.J Esuene Sports stadium Calabar, Chairman of the State’s Sports Commission, Mr Emmanuel Olom said, safety and wellness are basic requirements for Athletes and Sports men, hence the need to comply with guidelines guiding routine practices.
He said, the Commission found it neccesary to partner with the Red Cross Society to retrain it’s members on prerequisite knowledge following the demise of some members as a result of ill practices during the course of their jobs.
He urged participants to remain committed to the training as he described the gesture as a rare opportunity whose maximum impact will improve the standard of sports in the state and guarantee safety of athletes and Officials at all times.
One of the Participants, Honourable Ekanem Ekpenyong (Commissioner I in the Sports Commission) thanked the Sports Commission and the Red Cross Society for the gesture as he noted that the training has aviled them the opportunity of retracting their steps to maintain Personal safety.
He called on the organizers to regularize the training in order to get more people involved to minimize casualty rates before, during and after Sport Events.
The training includes a question and answer section, simulation , drills as well as personal accessement with blood, sugar and heart beat rates of participants being checked as well as diagnosis of some illnesses with participants drawn from Field and track events, gymnastics etc.
