The Cross River Ministry of Environment has visited the management of Niger Flour Mills operating in Calabar with a view to appraise their operations in compliance with environmental standard and to also inform the company of several complaints by residents within the affected area of the stench coming out from their operations.
The Commissioner for Environment, Mr Mfon Bassey, who led other members of staff of the ministry, told the management of Niger Flour Mills to take steps in addressing the stench arising from their waste, adding that the health of residents in the area should be their utmost priority.
He said that the ministry, was committed to ensuring a clean and green environment that will promote the healthy living of the people, thereby advising the management of the company to take extra steps in treating their waste.
He said that the state governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, places premium on the clean and green environment in the state.
The Commissioner and his team, who were conducted round the facility, urged Niger Mills Company not to flush their watery waste through the drainage system without appropriate treatment to reduce the stench in other not to have harmful effects on residents in the area.
